The trap, said plainly

People buy NBA League Pass or ESPN+ from a New York apartment and then discover the Knicks or Rangers game is missing. That is not a defect in the app. It is the product. Official NBA League Pass purchase FAQ (nba.com/league-pass-purchase, checked 2026-09-05): locally televised games in your area are not available live and show up on demand three days later. Nationally broadcast games are also not live on League Pass; they appear at 6:00 a.m. ET the next day.

Official NHL US how-to-watch (nhl.com/info/how-to-watch-and-stream-nhl-games, checked 2026-09-05): local-market fans use the team’s local broadcaster; out-of-market fans use ESPN+ / Center Ice. NHL.com’s ZIP table lists Rangers, Islanders and Devils as MSG Networks. We will not invent a sentence that says “ESPN+ blacks out every in-market game” unless the league publishes those exact words. The structure is enough: if you are in New York, you are not the out-of-market customer that product is sold to.

MSG, MSG Sportsnet and the 2026 streaming move

MSG Networks operates MSG Network and MSG Sportsnet (formerly MSG Plus) plus a streaming product historically sold as MSG+ (msgnetworks.com/about-2, 2026-09-05). The long-standing assignment New Yorkers know is Knicks and Rangers on MSG, Islanders and Devils on MSG Sportsnet, with overflow when two games collide. On 2026-07-29, MSG Networks and YES Network named DAZN the exclusive direct-to-consumer streaming home for the 2026-27 NBA and NHL seasons (DAZN Group press). That is a DTC / authenticated-streaming change. It does not, by itself, tell you whether YouTube TV or Hulu added linear MSG this month. Those lineups were unclear from official ZIP tools on 2026-09-05. A January 2025 newspaper roundup is not a September 2026 channel grid.

Optimum and MSG had a carriage blackout that began 2025-01-01 and a restoration deal announced 2025-02-22. That fight is historical. If your current bill is missing MSG, read the bill and the provider’s notice — do not assume it is still 2025.
